Abongile Fumba was born in a small town called Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. She was introduced to opera when she started high school at Msobomvu Senior Secondary by her choir conductor Mr Sibusiso Njeza in 2005. In 2010 she came to study a performer’s diploma in opera at the University of Cape Town. She is currently doing her final year in her studies. Abongile participated as a chorus member in UCT/Cape Town Opera collaborations Rake’s progress, The Tales of Hoffmann..In 2012 she was invited to be part of the Schleswig-Holstein music festival choir in Germany. In 2014 she sang the role of Mother Jeanne in Dialogues of the Carmelites by Francis Poulenc and Modestina in Gioachino Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims and she was also 3rd prize winner in the annual Schock singing competition held at the baxter. She was also a chorus member with the Cape Town Opera chorus in the Bryn Terfel gala concert and in 2015 she toured with Cape Town Opera to Spain. She is currently studying under Virginia Davids.
