Athenkosi Hoyi is a 25 year old student who is currently working on completing her Post Graduate Diploma in music at the University of Cape Town. She was born in Cape Town and now lives with her parents and younger siblings in the township of Old Crossroads.
Athenkosi matriculated in 2009 from Immaculata High School in Wynberg. She then started her undergraduate studies at UCT in 2010, under Mr Patrick Tikolo, who is still her voice trainer. In the year 2014, Athenkosi graduated on Dean’s Merit List with distinction in Vocal Studies. Athenkosi started her singing in high school but received her formal training when she started at UCT. She has been involved in the UCT opera school productions since 2011 where she was part of the chorus. In 2014 she did her first role as Sister Constance in Poulenc’s The Dialogue of the Carmelites. She has been part of the Darling’s Don Giovanni as the sassy and young Zerlina, a Mozart composed opera. Since 2012, she has been traveling internationally with Cape Town Opera company as part of their ad hoc chorus, with their famous production of Porgy and Bess. Last year, Athenkosi played the leading role of Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro- The Marriage of Figaro which was performed at Baxter and later in the year, she performed at the Artscape Youth music festival, where she sang Gounod’s Je veux vivre from Romeo and Juliet, accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Brandon Phillips. Athenkosi is not just a dedicated opera student, she is involved in community projects, one where she is one of the two music and drama tutors at the disadvantaged schools in her township.
