Bongani Makhanya – Tenor

Bongani Penuel Makhanya born in Nelspruit,Mpumalanga. Matriculated in 2004 Lekazi central went to further his studies at Tshwane University of Technology obtaining a B-tech degree in vocal art Performance, under the vocal guidance of Eric Müller. In 2009 he was invited to join the Cape Town opera intensive training program as a studio member. In 2011-2013 he joined the Black Tie Ensemble now Gauteng Opera as part of the ensemble undertaking various Opera compromario roles such as El Remendado in Bizet’s Carmen, Gherardo in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi,Arturo in Donizetti’s Lucia. He’s currently doing his 2nd year Postgraduate in Opera at UCT Opera School, College of Music under the vocal guidance of George Stevens and Kamal Khan. Having Participated in various school productions in Collaboration with Cape town opera such as La Traviata as Gastone, The Chief in Bessie The Blue Eyed Xhosa the Four:30 South African operas, Don Basillio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Mr O’Brein in The Rise and fall of Mahagony by Kurt Weill. He is finishing off his degree with the Opera Die Zauberflöte by Mozart doing the role of Monostatos later in the year, 2016 in Collaboration with Cape Town Opera.
